PHP Mail vs Sendmail vs SMTP in Joomla

Joomla’s Mailer setting controls how Joomla hands outgoing messages to a mail transport. PHP Mail, Sendmail, and SMTP can all be valid in the right environment, but they place responsibility for delivery in different parts of the stack.

Understand what the Joomla Mailer setting changes

Joomla’s Mailer setting controls how Joomla hands outgoing messages to a mail transport. PHP Mail, Sendmail, and SMTP can all be valid in the right environment, but they place responsibility for delivery in different parts of the stack.

Changing the mailer does not by itself solve deliverability. SPF, DKIM, DMARC, sender reputation, reverse DNS, quotas, and recipient filtering still matter after Joomla successfully submits a message.

PHP Mail: simple when the host already manages mail

With PHP Mail, Joomla uses PHP’s mail function and the server’s configured local mail transport. It can require very little Joomla configuration on hosting where outbound mail is already set up correctly.

The tradeoff is that troubleshooting often moves outside Joomla. If PHP accepts the message but it never leaves the server, the hosting provider or local mail-transfer configuration may need investigation.

Sendmail: use a local sendmail-compatible transport

The Sendmail option hands mail to a server-side sendmail-compatible executable or mail transfer agent. It is appropriate only when the hosting environment provides and permits that path.

The executable path and local mail routing must be correct. The server still needs valid sender policy, DNS, and reputation for reliable external delivery.

SMTP: connect Joomla to a defined mail service

SMTP makes the external mail endpoint explicit: Joomla connects to a host using a specified port, security mode, authentication setting, username, and credential.

This is often easier to correlate with a dedicated mail provider because connection and server responses are visible, but it introduces provider-specific credentials, authentication policy, and outbound network requirements.

Choose the transport that matches your infrastructure

On managed hosting, ask which mail paths are supported. For a dedicated transactional provider, SMTP often gives clearer provider-level diagnostics. For a correctly managed local mail server, PHP Mail or Sendmail can be perfectly valid.

After selecting a mailer, save Global Configuration and use Send Test Mail. Then trigger a normal Joomla notification and confirm receipt. Record the non-secret working configuration so future administrators know which system owns each part of the mail path.
