How to Enable Joomla Error Reporting to Diagnose a Problem

Use error reporting for a short diagnostic window

Joomla can change the PHP error-reporting level used by the site. Detailed errors can expose file paths, code details, and environment information, so enable them only while diagnosing a problem and restore the normal production setting afterward.

Open the Server settings in Global Configuration

In Joomla Administrator, open System → Global Configuration and select the Server tab. Find Error Reporting. Current Joomla documentation describes System Default, None, Simple, and Maximum; the older Development option was removed because modern PHP treats the relevant all-errors settings equivalently.

Select Maximum when you need the full PHP error

Set Error Reporting to Maximum, save the configuration, and reproduce the failing page. Maximum overrides the server's normal level so Joomla can surface PHP errors that may otherwise be hidden behind a blank page or generic error response.

Understand what System Default means

System Default leaves PHP error reporting at the level configured by the server. That can be appropriate for normal operation, but it may hide the message needed during troubleshooting. The exact production policy belongs to the hosting and application environment.

If Administrator is unavailable, use configuration.php carefully

Joomla documentation notes that the same Maximum setting can be applied by editing the site's configuration.php and setting the error_reporting configuration value to maximum. Make a backup first, preserve valid PHP syntax, and use the hosting file manager or another authorized method.

Add Debug System only when it helps

For fatal-error diagnosis Joomla documentation also recommends Debug System together with Maximum error reporting when appropriate. Debugging can provide a stack trace and other diagnostics, but it exposes more information than error reporting alone. Use it only for controlled troubleshooting.

Restore production-safe settings after the test

Capture the complete error, URL, time, and steps that reproduce it, then turn Debug System off and return Error Reporting to the site's normal setting. Use the captured message and logs to fix the cause rather than leaving diagnostic output visible.
