How to Find Joomla Error Logs

Check the configured Joomla log folder

In Joomla Administrator, open System → Setup → Global Configuration and review the Logging tab. Joomla documentation states that Path to Log Folder shows where Joomla stores logs configured for debugging and logging. Do not assume every installation uses the same physical path, especially after migrations or customized hosting layouts.

Understand what Joomla logs can contain

Joomla logging can record messages from Joomla core and extensions through the Joomla logging API. The System - Debug plugin can also control broader logging options such as Log Almost Everything. The exact files present depend on what code is logging and which categories and priorities are enabled, so an empty or quiet log folder does not prove the server has no errors.

Look for the general diagnostic log when enabled

Joomla documentation describes the everything.php log file when Log Almost Everything is enabled and notes that migrated older sites can have a different historical log location. Use the configured Path to Log Folder as the authority for the current site instead of relying only on a remembered default path.

Check PHP and web-server logs too

Global Configuration documentation explicitly warns that Joomla error logs contain errors trapped by Joomla and that other errors may appear only in server error logs. Hosting panels commonly expose PHP, Apache, Nginx, or application error logs. Check those sources when Joomla crashes before its logger can run or when the request is rejected upstream.

Match logs by timestamp and request

Reproduce the problem once when safe, note the exact time, then inspect nearby entries. Use the URL, extension name, exception class, IP address where appropriate, or request identifier to distinguish the failing request from unrelated traffic. Time-zone differences between Joomla, PHP, the host, and a CDN can otherwise make the wrong event look relevant.

Do not make logs publicly downloadable

Joomla logging documentation warns that logs can expose valuable system information. Keep the log directory protected and never move a diagnostic log into a public download location just to share it. Redact passwords, tokens, cookies, personal information, and other secrets before providing excerpts to support.

Turn temporary verbose logging back down

Options such as Log Almost Everything and executed-query logging are intended for short troubleshooting or benchmarking periods. After capturing the failure, return the site to its normal logging level. Excessive logging can consume disk space and may record more installation detail than is appropriate for routine production operation.
