How to Find the Real Error Behind a Joomla Blank Page
Treat a blank page as a symptom
A completely blank response often means PHP or the application failed before Joomla could render a useful error page, but the browser alone does not identify the cause. Record the exact URL, whether Administrator also fails, and what changed immediately before the blank page appeared.
Enable Maximum error reporting temporarily
If Administrator works, open System → Global Configuration → Server and set Error Reporting to Maximum. Reload the failing URL. Joomla's documentation specifically recommends increased error reporting when a fatal error is otherwise hidden.
Use configuration.php if the backend is inaccessible
When the failure also blocks Administrator, Joomla documentation provides a recovery path through configuration.php: set the error_reporting value to maximum. If deeper diagnostics are necessary, Debug System can also be enabled through configuration.php. Back up the file before editing it.
Read the first meaningful fatal error
After reloading, capture the error type, message, file, and line number. If a stack trace appears, start with where the exception or fatal condition was triggered, then follow the call path for context. Do not focus only on the last line if it is merely Joomla's error handler.
Check server-side logs when the screen stays blank
PHP may be configured to log errors without displaying them, or the failure may occur before Joomla controls output. Review PHP-FPM or PHP error logs, web-server logs, hosting error logs, and Joomla logs at the exact request time.
Connect the error to the responsible layer
A path under an extension can indicate incompatible or broken extension code; a database exception points toward schema, credentials, or query problems; memory exhaustion points toward PHP resource use; and parse errors point to invalid PHP. Confirm the evidence before disabling or replacing anything.
Turn diagnostics back off after capture
Once you have the real error, restore normal error reporting and disable Debug System. Detailed errors and traces can reveal sensitive implementation details. Fix the verified cause on staging when possible, then retest the same URL on production.
