How to Fix a 404 Error in Joomla
Confirm the requested URL and the intended content
Start with the exact URL producing the 404 and identify the Joomla menu item, article, category, or component route it should reach. Test the target from a Joomla-generated link rather than only from an old bookmark or manually typed URL. This distinguishes a broken incoming link from a routing or publishing problem.
Check that the content and menu path still exist
Verify that the target article, category, menu item, and required extension are published and accessible to the current user. If an alias or menu hierarchy changed, an old SEF URL may no longer describe the current route. Restore the intended route or create a deliberate redirect instead of duplicating content solely to satisfy an obsolete URL.
Understand Joomla SEF routing behavior
Joomla's programmer documentation explains that the router parses URL path segments into query values. If path segments remain unrecognized after routing, Joomla treats the URL as invalid and throws a 404. This makes incorrect aliases, missing menu context, unsupported component routes, and malformed SEF paths important diagnostic targets.
Check Search Engine Friendly URLs and rewriting
If 404s began after changing SEO settings, compare Search Engine Friendly URLs and URL Rewriting with the web-server configuration. On Apache, Joomla's distributed htaccess.txt contains the core rewrite section used to route non-file and non-directory requests to index.php. Rename or edit .htaccess only according to Joomla and hosting requirements.
Clear the relevant cache after route changes
A browser, Joomla cache, reverse proxy, or CDN can preserve an old redirect or page response after aliases and routes change. Clear only the relevant layer and retry the exact URL. Do not use cache clearing as the primary fix when Joomla's generated links themselves point to a route that no longer exists.
Check third-party component routers and plugins
Components build and parse their own route segments inside Joomla's application routing. If only one extension's URLs fail, check its update status, routing options, menu integration, and documentation. Disable or replace routing-related plugins only on staging or during a controlled test so unrelated URLs are not disrupted.
Add redirects for genuinely moved public URLs
When content intentionally moves, preserve useful external links with a permanent redirect from the old URL to the correct new URL using Joomla's supported redirect facilities or a carefully managed server rule. Retest the old and new URLs and avoid redirect chains or broad rules that hide unrelated 404 errors.
