How to Fix Joomla Errors Caused by an Incorrect PHP Version
Confirm the PHP version serving Joomla
Check Joomla System Information or the hosting PHP information for the web runtime. Do not rely only on php -v from a shell because CLI and web PHP can use different versions or configuration files. Record the PHP version, SAPI/handler, loaded configuration, and the Joomla version before attempting a fix.
Compare the result with Joomla's current requirements
For Joomla 6.x, current Joomla technical requirements list PHP 8.3 as the supported minimum and PHP 8.4 as recommended. Joomla 5.x has different requirements. Use the requirements for the exact Joomla major version installed rather than assuming that the newest PHP release is appropriate for every Joomla site.
Check third-party extension compatibility too
A PHP version can satisfy Joomla core while an older template, component, module, or plugin remains incompatible. Use the first fatal error or stack trace to identify the code path, then check the extension vendor's supported Joomla and PHP versions. Update or replace incompatible extensions rather than editing Joomla core.
Use the host's supported PHP selector or configuration
Change the website's PHP version through the hosting control panel, PHP-FPM pool, server configuration, or other method supported by the provider. Confirm that the domain or virtual host actually switched. On servers hosting multiple sites, avoid changing a global PHP version when only one Joomla site requires a different runtime.
Recheck PHP modules and configuration after switching
A PHP version change can select a different php.ini and extension set. Confirm Joomla's required modules are loaded and compare memory, upload, session, OPcache, and execution-time settings. A site can still fail after selecting the correct version if the new PHP runtime lacks a required module or uses unsuitable limits.
Do not use a PHP downgrade as a substitute for a supported Joomla state
If the site requires an obsolete PHP version because of an old extension, treat that as a compatibility problem to resolve. Joomla's backward-compatibility policy also warns that downgrading dependencies is not supported as a general recovery method. Prefer supported Joomla, PHP, and extension combinations tested together on staging.
Retest the full site after the correction
Verify frontend pages, Administrator, login, forms, uploads, scheduled tasks, mail, and important extensions. Review PHP and Joomla logs for new warnings or fatal errors. Keep a documented record of the working PHP version and extension compatibility so a future hosting change does not silently move the site to an unsupported runtime.
