How to Fix Joomla Errors Caused by Missing PHP Extensions

Identify the missing module from evidence

Start with the exact fatal error, Joomla pre-update check, installer warning, or extension diagnostic. PHP errors such as an undefined function can indicate that the module providing that function is absent, but verify rather than guessing. Joomla System Information and PHP information can show the modules loaded by the web runtime.

Compare against Joomla's required PHP modules

Current Joomla 6.x technical requirements list json, simplexml, dom, zlib, gd, and an appropriate database driver such as mysqlnd, pdo_mysql, or pdo_pgsql as required PHP modules; mbstring is recommended. The required set can vary by Joomla branch, so check the documentation for the exact major version installed.

Check the web runtime rather than only command-line PHP

PHP's get_loaded_extensions() reports modules compiled and loaded in the running interpreter, and extension_loaded() can test a specific module. A php -m command checks the PHP binary invoked at the command line, which may not be the same PHP configuration serving Joomla. Confirm the website's actual SAPI and configuration.

Enable or install the extension through the supported server layer

On shared hosting, use the provider's PHP selector or ask support to enable the required module. On a managed or self-managed server, use the operating system or PHP packaging method appropriate to that environment. Do not download random binary modules or edit Joomla core to work around a missing server dependency.

Restart or reload the relevant PHP service when required

Some PHP-FPM, Apache, or other server configurations do not pick up module changes until the service or pool reloads. Follow the hosting platform's procedure and then verify the module is actually loaded in the web runtime. A package being installed on disk does not prove the active Joomla PHP process has loaded it.

Check extension-specific dependencies separately

Third-party Joomla extensions can require PHP modules beyond Joomla core's baseline. If Joomla itself loads but one extension fails, consult that extension's current requirements and error logs. Install only the justified dependency, and verify its security and support status before enabling it on production.

Retest the original operation and remove temporary diagnostics

Repeat the page, upload, image operation, update, or extension action that originally failed. Confirm the error is gone and review logs for follow-on problems. Remove any temporary public phpinfo page immediately because it exposes detailed server configuration that should not remain publicly accessible.
