How to Fix Joomla “Failed Opening Required” Errors

A “failed opening required” error means PHP could not load a file that Joomla or an extension considers mandatory. The safest fix is to identify the exact missing path, determine which package owns it, and repair the deployment or path problem rather than creating placeholder files.

Capture the complete require error

Record the path PHP attempted to open, the file and line issuing require or require_once, the request URL, and the timestamp. Review the surrounding PHP and server log entries as well; an earlier warning may explain why the expected path was never created.

Verify the required file and its owner

  1. Check the exact resolved path with the hosting file manager or shell.
  2. If the file is missing, identify the Joomla core, extension, template, Composer library, or custom integration that should provide it.
  3. Compare the installed files with a clean copy of the same release.
  4. Do not create an empty file merely to satisfy the path; the missing file normally contains required code.

Check incomplete updates and migrations

Interrupted extension updates can leave a new PHP file requiring a dependency that was never deployed. Server moves can also invalidate hard-coded absolute paths when the account name, document root, container path, or operating system changes. Reinstall the complete supported package or correct the configuration instead of mixing files from different releases.

Check capitalization, permissions, and path handling

Linux filesystems are usually case-sensitive, so File.php and file.php are different. Confirm every path segment, then verify that the PHP/web-server account can traverse parent directories and read the target file. If custom code uses a relative path, inspect its working directory and include path, but prefer Joomla path constants, namespaces, and autoloading over ambiguous server-wide search paths.

Repair and verify

Reinstall or update the package that owns the file, correct supported path or permission problems, and repeat the original request. Review the logs again because the first missing dependency can hide another one. If Joomla core is implicated, use a supported core repair/update path rather than editing core require statements.
