How to Check the Version of an Installed Joomla Extension
Checking an extension's installed version is useful before troubleshooting, applying an update, or comparing your site with a developer's compatibility requirements. Joomla records extension metadata supplied by the extension package, including a version when the developer provides one.
Find the Installed Extension
- Sign in to the Joomla Administrator.
- Go to System → Manage → Extensions.
- Search for the extension by name.
- Identify the correct entry by its type, location, and—when applicable—plugin folder.
- Read the version shown for that installed extension.
If a product installs several extensions, check the version of the specific component, plugin, module, package, or library you are diagnosing. Related entries do not necessarily have to use identical version numbers.
If the Version Is Missing or Unexpected
The displayed metadata comes from the extension's installation information. If the developer did not supply useful version metadata, Joomla may not be able to show the value you expect. Compare the exact extension entry with the vendor's documentation rather than guessing from a package filename or a product's marketing version.
Do Not Confuse Installed Version with Available Update
The installed version describes what is currently registered on your site. Joomla's extension-update screen serves a different purpose: it queries configured update servers for updates supported by Joomla's update system. An extension can be installed correctly even when it does not provide Joomla-compatible update-server information.
Check Related Extensions When Troubleshooting
For extension suites, record the versions of the main component and any relevant plugins, modules, libraries, or packages. A mixed set of files after an incomplete update can produce behavior that is difficult to explain if you check only the main component.
Record the Joomla and PHP Versions Too
When you are checking compatibility or preparing a support request, also record the site's Joomla version and PHP version. Extension compatibility can depend on the combination of Joomla, PHP, and the extension release, so the extension version alone may not explain a problem.
