How to Disable a Broken Joomla Plugin Without Administrator Access

Use this only for emergency recovery

If a third-party plugin prevents Joomla Administrator from loading, direct recovery may be necessary. If Administrator still works, use System → Manage → Plugins. Back up the database first.

Identify the exact plugin

Use logs, recent install history, vendor documentation, and a read-only database query to identify its element and plugin folder.

Find its Joomla record

Joomla records extensions in #__extensions. Locate exactly one row with type='plugin' and the matching element/folder. Stop if the result is ambiguous.

Disable only that row

Set only that confirmed plugin record's enabled value to 0, with type, element, and folder in the WHERE clause. Verify one affected row.

Test Administrator

Reload Administrator. If access returns, keep the plugin disabled while you diagnose compatibility, dependencies, configuration, or damaged files.

Do not delete extension state

Do not delete the #__extensions row as an uninstall shortcut or broadly disable core plugins. Joomla installation state involves more than one database row.

Repair before re-enabling

Install a compatible fixed release or follow the vendor recovery procedure. Re-enable through Joomla when possible.

Verify the site

Test frontend and Administrator and review logs, including the feature active when the failure began.
