How to Fix “Destination Folder Already Exists” When Installing an Extension
An existing destination can belong to a currently installed extension, a partial earlier installation, manually copied files, or unrelated custom content. Record the path named by Joomla and inspect it before deleting or renaming anything. Removing a legitimate component, module, plugin, template, library, or media directory can break the site.
Check whether Joomla already knows about the extension
Open System → Manage → Extensions and search for the extension name, element, or package. If it is already installed, use the developer's supported update or reinstall process rather than treating the existing directory as debris. Also check whether a package installs several related extensions whose folders may already be present.
Compare the folder with a clean package
Download a fresh package from the developer's official source and inspect its manifest and directory layout. Compare the existing server folder with the expected extension files. A matching folder plus a missing extension record can indicate an incomplete uninstall or manual file copy; a partially populated folder can indicate an interrupted install.
Recover partial state safely
Before cleanup, make a current filesystem and database backup. Follow the vendor's uninstall, cleanup, or reinstall instructions when available. If the previous attempt failed midway and the correct recovery state is uncertain, restoring the verified pre-install backup is safer than deleting folders and database rows independently.
Retry and verify the installation
After the conflict is resolved through a supported method, install the known-good package again. Confirm the extension record, expected files, and primary function. If Joomla still reports the same destination, verify that the error path is the one you inspected and check ownership or permissions that may have prevented the previous cleanup from completing.
