How to Fix “JInstaller: Install: Cannot Find XML Setup File”
“JInstaller: Install: Cannot Find XML Setup File” means Joomla did not find a valid extension manifest where the installer expected one. Fix the package or package selection first; changing database settings or broad filesystem permissions will not create a missing manifest.
Verify that you selected a Joomla extension package
Make sure the uploaded file is intended for your Joomla version and is not a source-code archive, documentation download, language-independent asset bundle, or an outer ZIP containing several installers. Check the developer's installation instructions and use a fresh original download.
Locate the manifest inside the archive
Open the ZIP locally and look for the extension's XML manifest. The filename does not have to match every extension type in the same way, but the XML must be a valid Joomla extension manifest and must be located where the installer can discover it. If an outer archive contains another installer ZIP, upload that inner ZIP instead.
Undo accidental repackaging
A common failure occurs when files are extracted, placed inside an additional folder, and zipped again. That extra directory level can move the manifest away from the package root Joomla expects. Return to the untouched vendor package. If you maintain the extension yourself, build the distribution ZIP from the manifest root rather than from its parent directory.
Check extraction only after package structure is correct
If the manifest is visibly present in the correct archive location, review Joomla/PHP logs for ZIP extraction errors, temporary-directory failures, disk-space limits, or file permission problems. Confirm the Joomla temporary directory exists and is writable by PHP.
Validate a custom manifest
For an extension you develop, confirm the XML is well formed, declares a supported Joomla extension type, and references files and folders that actually exist in the package. XML syntax errors can make a present file unusable as a setup manifest.
Retry with a clean package
Install a fresh corrected archive and confirm Joomla reports success. Then verify the extension is listed under System → Manage → Extensions and that its expected component, module, plugin, template, or language functionality is available.
