How to Fix Joomla Extension Installation Memory Errors
Confirm the error is memory-related
Reproduce the installation once and record Joomla's full message plus the matching PHP/server log. A PHP allowed-memory-size exhaustion is different from an upload limit, timeout, extraction error, or database failure.
Check Joomla 6.x requirements
Current Joomla 6.x technical requirements recommend a PHP memory limit of at least 256 MB. That is a recommendation, not proof that every extension will install within exactly that amount. Large packages and installer scripts can increase peak usage.
Check the web PHP configuration
Inspect the site's effective memory_limit, not only command-line PHP. Hosting can run different PHP configurations for web and CLI requests. If the log proves memory exhaustion, raise the limit through the hosting-supported method or ask the provider.
Avoid unlimited increases
Do not keep increasing memory simply to force an installer through. Defective or incompatible code can consume excessive memory regardless of the limit. If a reasonable configuration still exhausts memory, collect the trace and contact the extension developer.
Identify the installation stage
If memory is exhausted during extraction, check archive integrity and storage. If it occurs in an installer script or database migration, give the developer the stack trace and exact package version. The failing stage is more useful than the generic phrase “memory error.”
Verify before retrying
A failed request can leave partial files or records. Check System → Manage → Extensions and follow vendor recovery instructions. Restore the pre-install backup when necessary before another controlled attempt.
