How to Fix Joomla Extension Installation Temporary Folder Errors

Identify the temporary-folder failure

Record Joomla's exact message and the matching PHP/server log. Distinguish a missing Joomla temp path, unwritable directory, PHP upload-temp problem, extraction failure, disk-space error, and hosting restriction.

Check Joomla's configured temp path

In System → Global Configuration → Server, review the Path to Temp Folder. It should point to the intended Joomla temporary directory. A migrated site can retain an old absolute path that no longer exists.

Confirm the directory is usable

Verify the configured directory exists and that the PHP/web-server process can create and remove files there. Correct ownership and access according to the host's PHP model rather than using world-writable permissions.

Check storage and quotas

Extension packages may need space for both the archive and extracted files. Check free disk space, account quotas, inode limits, and hosting-specific temporary-storage limits.

Check PHP upload temporary storage

Browser uploads also depend on PHP's upload handling. If the log refers to PHP's upload temporary location instead of Joomla's temp path, inspect the effective web PHP configuration or ask the host to repair it.

Check hosting restrictions

Settings such as open_basedir, jailed filesystems, container mounts, or security policies can block an otherwise valid path. Use the error log to identify the restriction.

Use Install from Folder deliberately

With a correctly extracted extension source on the server, Install from Folder can isolate upload/archive staging problems. It does not repair a malformed manifest or broken installer script.

Retry and verify

After fixing the specific path, storage, or access issue, retry once. Verify the extension under System → Manage → Extensions and use vendor recovery guidance if an earlier attempt left partial state.
