How to Fix “Unable to Find Install Package” in Joomla
“Unable to Find Install Package” means Joomla did not reach a usable installation source. The message is generic and can follow a wrong file selection, upload or extraction problem, invalid package layout, or temporary-storage problem. Diagnose the package and environment before assuming the extension is incompatible.
Make Sure a File Was Actually Selected
Open System → Install → Extensions, choose Upload Package File, select the intended extension archive, and wait for the result. Joomla cannot locate a package if no usable file reaches the installer.
Confirm You Selected the Installable ZIP
Commercial downloads can be distribution bundles. Check whether the vendor instructs you to extract an outer archive and upload an inner Joomla ZIP. If the vendor supplies a normal install ZIP, upload it intact.
Verify the Archive Is Complete
Download the package again from the official source if corruption is possible and compare a published checksum when available. A damaged archive can reach the server but fail during extraction or inspection.
Check Upload Size, Temporary Space, and Temp Path
Check PHP upload limits, free disk space, and Joomla's configured temporary location. Hosting logs can help distinguish an upload/storage problem from an invalid package structure.
Use Install from Folder Correctly
For Install from Folder, extract the extension into a server directory and point Joomla to the directory containing the manifest and installation files. An arbitrary download directory is not automatically an installable source.
Check the Manifest and Package Level
Joomla extensions use XML manifests; package extensions also have a package manifest and constituent archives. A missing manifest or unexpected extra directory level can prevent the installer from identifying the source. End users should obtain a corrected package rather than rewrite vendor manifests.
Do Not Apply Old Version-Specific Fixes Blindly
Joomla documentation records an “Unable to find install package” defect specific to Joomla 3.4.0 and fixed for 3.4.1. That historical defect is not a current Joomla 6 diagnosis; troubleshoot current package and environment evidence instead.
Send Useful Evidence to the Developer
Provide the exact filename/version, Joomla and PHP versions, install method, complete Joomla message, and related PHP/server log entry.
