How to Install a Joomla Component
A Joomla component is an extension that provides a substantial application or feature area. Components use the same core extension installer as other Joomla extension types.
Prepare the Component Package
Obtain the component from its developer or another trusted source. Check its documented Joomla/PHP compatibility and determine whether the download is the actual install package or a container that includes a component plus modules, plugins, or documentation.
Install the Component
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Install → Extensions.
- Choose Upload Package File for a normal installable archive.
- Select or drag the component package into the installer and allow Joomla to complete installation.
- Read the resulting success message and any post-installation instructions.
Find and Configure the Component
After a successful install, the component is normally available from Joomla's Components area. You can also confirm its registration under System → Manage → Extensions. Open the component and complete any configuration, database setup, API credentials, permissions, or onboarding required by its developer.
Check Bundled Extensions
Some component installers also install supporting modules or plugins. Check the developer's instructions and verify whether those supporting extensions must be enabled or configured separately.
Troubleshoot a Failed Component Installation
If Joomla rejects the package, verify that you selected the actual Joomla installer archive, not a documentation bundle or unrelated download. Also check compatibility, PHP/upload limits, the Joomla temporary directory, filesystem permissions, and any specific error shown by the installer. Restore from backup if a failed installation leaves the production site unstable.
