How to Install a Joomla Extension
Joomla extensions add features to a site. Components, modules, plugins, templates, languages, and packages are installed through Joomla's extension installer, although what you do after installation depends on the extension type.
Before Installing
Download the extension only from a source you trust and read the developer's installation and compatibility notes. Confirm that the release supports your Joomla and PHP versions, and make a current backup before changing a production site.
Open the Extension Installer
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Go to System → Install → Extensions.
- Choose the installation method supplied or supported by the extension developer.
Install an Uploaded Package
For the common package-file method, use Upload Package File and select or drag the extension archive into the installer. Joomla reads the manifest and installs the extension files and registration data. Do not extract an ordinary installable ZIP unless the developer specifically says the download is a container holding multiple install packages.
Other Installation Methods
The installer can also provide Install from Web, Install from Folder, and Install from URL. Availability can depend on the site and installer configuration. Folder installation is useful when an upload is too large for the server's upload limit. Use remote-URL installation only when you trust the source and transport path.
Verify the Installation
Read the success message and the extension developer's post-install instructions. Then go to System → Manage → Extensions to confirm the extension is registered. Components commonly appear in the Components area; modules and plugins may need to be configured or enabled before they do anything visible.
If Installation Fails
Read the complete Joomla error before retrying. Common causes include an incompatible Joomla/PHP version, an invalid package, upload-size limits, unwritable temporary or destination paths, missing PHP capabilities, or a package that must first be unpacked into separate installers. Avoid repeatedly installing over a partial result until you understand the failure.
