How to Install a Joomla Extension from a Folder
Install from Folder lets Joomla install an extension whose extracted installation files are already in a directory accessible to the web server. This is useful when an extension is too large to upload through the browser or when the package has already been transferred to the server.
Prepare the Extension Directory
Obtain the correct Joomla extension package from a trusted source and follow its developer documentation. Extract the installable package into a server directory that Joomla/PHP can read. The directory must contain the extension's installation manifest and files, not merely another unopened ZIP archive unless the extension's package structure specifically requires nested archives.
Install from the Folder
- Sign in to the Joomla Administrator.
- Go to System → Install → Extensions.
- Select Install from Folder.
- Enter the server filesystem path to the prepared installation directory.
- Start the installation and wait for Joomla to report the result.
The value is a server-side directory path, not a public website URL. Joomla must be able to read the directory and its installation manifest.
Verify the Extension
After a successful installation, go to System → Manage → Extensions and confirm the extension is registered with the expected type and version. Then complete any extension-specific configuration, enabling, module assignment, or other setup described by the developer.
Fix Folder Installation Errors
If Joomla cannot find or install the extension, recheck the filesystem path, directory permissions, ownership, extracted folder level, and presence of the Joomla XML manifest. A common mistake is pointing Joomla at a parent folder that contains the real extension directory rather than at the directory containing the manifest.
Install from Folder Is Not the Same as Discover
Install from Folder processes an extension installation source directory through the installer. System → Install → Discover serves a different recovery/manual-deployment case: it searches Joomla's extension directories for compatible extensions whose files are already in their final locations but are not yet registered as installed. Use the method that matches how the extension files were placed on the server.
