How to Install a Joomla Extension from a URL

Install from URL lets Joomla obtain an installable extension package directly from a URL instead of first uploading the archive from your computer. The remote address must be accessible to your Joomla server and must resolve to an installable package.

Before Using Install from URL

Use only a URL supplied by a source you trust. Confirm the extension supports your Joomla and PHP versions and back up a production site before installation. Be careful with temporary, authenticated, or redirect-heavy download links because the server may not receive the expected extension archive.

Install the Extension

  1. Sign in to the Joomla Administrator.
  2. Go to System → Install → Extensions.
  3. Select Install from URL.
  4. Enter the direct URL for the installable extension package.
  5. Start the installation.
  6. Wait for Joomla to download and process the package, then read the result message.

Verify the Installation

Go to System → Manage → Extensions and locate the extension. Confirm the expected type and version are present. Complete any required post-install steps such as enabling a plugin, publishing a module, configuring a component, or reviewing a template style.

Why Install from URL Can Fail

The Joomla server—not your desktop browser—must be able to reach the remote package. Installation can fail when the URL is not a direct package download, requires an interactive login or cookie, has expired, redirects unexpectedly, is blocked by network or TLS configuration, or exceeds server resource limits. The remote server may also refuse requests from your host.

Use Upload Package File as a Reliable Alternative

If a valid extension will not install from its URL, download the installable archive to your computer from the vendor and use Upload Package File. That separates remote-download problems from Joomla package-installation problems and gives you a local copy of the exact archive you attempted to install.
