How to Install a Joomla Package

A Joomla package is an extension bundle that installs several related extensions together. A vendor may use one package to deliver a component, modules, plugins, libraries, or templates that are designed to work as a set. Installing the package rather than its individual files lets Joomla register the bundle correctly and helps keep later updates and uninstallation consistent.

Before You Install the Package

Confirm that the package supports your Joomla and PHP versions, make a current backup, and read the developer's installation notes. Keep the original package archive intact unless the vendor specifically tells you to extract it. A package archive can contain other ZIP files internally; those nested archives are normal for a Joomla package.

Install the Joomla Package

  1. Sign in to the Joomla Administrator.
  2. Go to System → Install → Extensions.
  3. Open Upload Package File.
  4. Drag the vendor's package archive into the upload area, or browse to the file on your computer.
  5. Wait for Joomla to process the archive and display the installation result.

Joomla reads the package manifest and installs the constituent extensions defined by the package. Do not separately install every nested archive unless the developer's instructions explicitly require that workflow.

Verify the Package Installed

Go to System → Manage → Extensions and search for the package or its included extensions. A package can install several extension types, so you may see a package entry plus components, plugins, modules, libraries, or templates. Configure or enable any included extensions that require a separate post-install step.

If the Package Will Not Install

Check that you selected the actual Joomla install package rather than a download bundle containing documentation or multiple alternative packages. Also check PHP upload limits, temporary-directory permissions, available disk space, and the vendor's Joomla/PHP compatibility requirements. If the upload is too large for the web installer, use an installation method supported by Joomla and the extension vendor rather than manually copying files into arbitrary Joomla directories.

Keep the Package Together for Maintenance

When a vendor distributes related extensions as a Joomla package, treat the package as the maintenance unit unless its documentation says otherwise. Joomla packages are specifically designed to install and uninstall their constituent extensions together, reducing the chance of leaving package-managed pieces behind.
