How to Install a Joomla Template as an Extension Package
Joomla templates are extensions, so a properly packaged site or Administrator template can be installed with Joomla's normal extension installer. The template ZIP should come from a trusted developer and should be compatible with your Joomla version.
Prepare the Template Package
Download the installable template archive and read the developer's instructions before uploading it. Some commercial downloads are container ZIP files that include documentation, quick-start packages, or multiple template versions. If the vendor says to extract the download first, locate the actual Joomla template package before continuing.
Install the Template
- Sign in to the Joomla Administrator.
- Go to System → Install → Extensions.
- Select Upload Package File.
- Drag the template ZIP into the upload area or browse to it.
- Wait for Joomla to report whether installation succeeded.
The normal Joomla installer handles templates along with other supported extension types. Installing the files does not necessarily make a new site template the active default template.
Verify the Template
After installation, confirm the template appears in Joomla's template management area. For a site template, review its template style before assigning it or making it the default. If the template package also installs plugins, modules, or a framework, follow the developer's post-install instructions and verify those pieces under Joomla's extension management screens.
Avoid Locking Yourself Out with an Administrator Template
Be more cautious when changing an Administrator template than when changing a site template. Keep another Administrator session available when practical and verify the new template works before relying on it. A broken Administrator template can make backend recovery more difficult.
Troubleshoot Installation Problems
If Joomla rejects the archive, verify that it is an installable Joomla template package and not a full-site backup or quick-start installer. Check the developer's Joomla/PHP requirements and your server upload limits. For templates manually copied to the correct template directory, Joomla's System → Install → Discover feature can detect compatible uninstalled extensions, but the normal package installer is preferable when a proper installable ZIP is available.
