How to Install an Extension from an Uploaded Package File
Upload Package File is the standard Joomla installation method when you already have an installable extension archive on your computer. It works with supported Joomla extension types such as components, modules, plugins, templates, languages, libraries, and packages.
Before Uploading the File
Download the extension from a trusted source, confirm its Joomla and PHP compatibility, and make a backup before changing a production site. Read the developer's instructions because the file you download may be a container archive that must be extracted before you reach the actual Joomla install package.
Upload and Install the Package
- Sign in to the Joomla Administrator.
- Go to System → Install → Extensions.
- Select the Upload Package File tab.
- Drag the installable archive into the upload area, or use the file browser to select it.
- Allow Joomla to upload, inspect, and install the extension.
- Read the resulting success message or error before leaving the page.
Verify the Installation
Go to System → Manage → Extensions and locate the installed extension. Check its type, status, and version. Depending on the extension, installation alone may not activate its functionality: plugins may need to be enabled, modules may need to be published and assigned, and components may require configuration.
If Joomla Rejects the Uploaded File
First verify that you selected the actual Joomla installation archive. Then check the extension's compatibility requirements, PHP upload and post limits, Joomla temporary-folder configuration, filesystem permissions, and available disk space. A server-side upload limit can prevent a valid large package from reaching Joomla at all.
Use Another Installer Method When Appropriate
Joomla also supports installing from a server folder, from a URL, and—when available—Install from Web. These are alternatives to Upload Package File, not additional required steps. Use the method that matches where the installable extension is located and the instructions supplied by its developer.
