How to Recover Joomla After Installing a Broken Extension

Preserve evidence first

Record the error, URL, timestamp, extension/version, Joomla/PHP versions, and relevant server logs before making more changes.

Restore a known-good backup when damage is broad

If frontend and Administrator are both broken or installation state is unknown, restoring the matching pre-install files-and-database backup is often safest.

Use Joomla management when available

If Administrator works, use System → Manage → Extensions or Plugins and follow vendor recovery instructions.

Recover a plugin that blocks Administrator

After backing up, a confirmed third-party plugin can be disabled by narrowly changing its #__extensions record to enabled=0. Require one matching plugin row.

Treat partial installs carefully

Current Joomla installer documentation shows installation can include file handling, database changes, installer scripts, manifest copying, and cleanup. Do not delete random files or rows.

Check compatibility before retrying

Verify the exact extension release supports Joomla 6 and your PHP/database environment.

Reproduce on staging

Test the fixed package, dependency, or recovery procedure on a staging copy matching production.

Verify recovery

Test frontend, Administrator, extension functions, and logs, and confirm a current backup before retrying production installation.
