How to Uninstall a Joomla Extension

Uninstalling a Joomla extension removes it through Joomla's extension-management process. Use Joomla's uninstall function rather than simply deleting extension folders, because an extension can include files, database records, related plugins or modules, and uninstall logic supplied by its developer.

Before You Uninstall

Make a current backup of the site's files and database. Confirm that the extension is no longer required, and review the developer's uninstall documentation. Export or preserve extension data you may need later: some extensions intentionally remove their own database tables or other stored data during uninstall, while others retain data.

Uninstall the Extension

  1. Sign in to the Joomla Administrator.
  2. Go to System → Manage → Extensions.
  3. Search for the extension and identify the correct entry by name and type.
  4. Check for related package, component, plugin, module, library, or template entries so you understand what belongs to the product.
  5. Select the extension you intend to remove and use Joomla's Uninstall action.
  6. Read the result message before making additional changes.

Handle Packages and Dependent Extensions Carefully

A Joomla package can be designed to install and uninstall multiple constituent extensions together. A third-party component can also depend on separate modules or plugins. Follow the vendor's documented removal order; uninstalling only one required piece can leave the remaining product unusable even though those entries are still installed.

If Joomla Will Not Uninstall It

Do not immediately delete the extension's directories. Record the exact error, check the extension developer's documentation, verify filesystem access and database health, and confirm that the extension is not protected or otherwise intentionally restricted. Manual cleanup should be a last resort based on extension-specific knowledge and a recoverable backup.

Verify the Site After Uninstalling

Return to System → Manage → Extensions and confirm the intended extension entries are gone. Test the frontend and Administrator areas that previously used the extension, clear relevant Joomla caches when appropriate, and check for broken menu items, modules, scheduled tasks, content integrations, or template references that depended on it.

Uninstall Is Different from Disable

If you only need to troubleshoot temporarily, disabling an extension that supports enable/disable state can be less destructive than uninstalling it. Uninstall when you actually intend to remove the extension and have accounted for its data and dependencies.
