What Happens When Joomla Installs an Extension?

Joomla first obtains the extension package

With a normal package installation, Joomla receives the extension archive, stages it in temporary storage, and extracts it so the installer can inspect the package. If this stage fails, later manifest, database, and installer-script work may never begin.

The manifest tells Joomla what the extension contains

Joomla extensions use an XML manifest to describe the extension type and installation information. Depending on the extension, the manifest can identify files, folders, languages, media, SQL files, namespaces, dependencies, update servers, and an installer script.

Joomla checks whether this is an install or update

The installer determines the extension identity and whether Joomla is installing a new extension or updating an existing one. That distinction matters because extension installer scripts can provide different install and update behavior.

Preflight code can stop the operation

An extension can provide installer-script logic that runs before the main install or update work. Current Joomla installer documentation includes minimum Joomla and PHP checks in its installer-script tooling. A third-party extension can also perform its own compatibility or environment checks.

Files and database changes are applied

Joomla copies the extension's declared files into their destinations and can execute SQL declared for installation or update. For updates, Joomla maintains extension schema-version information so ordered SQL update files can be applied as required.

Joomla registers the extension

Successful installation creates or updates Joomla's extension registration and stores relevant manifest information. Components, modules, plugins, templates, libraries, packages, languages, and files are registered according to their extension type.

Installer-script completion work can run

Extension installer scripts can run install/update and postflight logic around Joomla's installer process. Developers commonly use these stages for extension-specific setup, migration, validation, or finalization that cannot be expressed by the manifest alone.

A successful install still needs verification

Confirm the extension under System → Manage → Extensions, then enable or configure it where its type requires that. Test its primary feature and review logs. An installer success message proves the installation completed, not that every extension feature is correctly configured.
