How to Find Joomla's Log Directory

Open Joomla's Logging settings

In Administrator, go to System → Global Configuration → Logging. The Path to Log Folder field shows the absolute filesystem location Joomla uses for its own and extension logs. This is a server path, not a browser URL.

Confirm the directory on the server

Use the hosting file manager, SFTP, or SSH to navigate to the configured path. Current Joomla help states that the log folder must be writable by PHP. If the directory is missing or inaccessible, Joomla can fail before you are able to use normal logging.

Check configuration.php when needed

Joomla stores the log path in configuration.php. Reading that setting is useful when Administrator access is unavailable or when verifying a migrated site's absolute paths. Do not expose the full configuration.php file because it contains sensitive site and database information.

Know what Joomla logs do and do not contain

The Joomla log directory contains messages written through Joomla's logging system by core or extensions. It is not necessarily the location of PHP, web-server, hosting-security, or database logs. Joomla's documentation specifically notes that server errors may exist only in the server's own error logs.

Keep the log directory protected

Official Joomla security guidance recommends placing configurable log paths where casual web visitors cannot access them and warns against using a system-wide location such as /tmp. If logs remain under a web-accessible tree, use the hosting/server protections appropriate to that environment.

Verify write access without weakening the site

If logging is enabled but no log file can be created, check ownership, group, ACLs, directory traversal, and permissions for the PHP execution identity. Do not make the directory world-writable as a first response. Managed hosts may need to correct ownership at the platform level.

Document the path for troubleshooting

Record the verified log directory together with the hosting account and server-log locations. After migrations or restores, confirm that the absolute path still exists and is writable before relying on Joomla logs during another incident.
