How to Find Joomla's Temporary Directory

Check the configured path in Global Configuration

In Joomla Administrator, open System → Global Configuration → Server and find Path to Temp Folder. Joomla uses this writable directory for temporary files needed by core and extension operations. The value should be an absolute server filesystem path, not a website URL.

Confirm the path on the server

Open your hosting file manager, SFTP client, or SSH session and navigate to the path shown by Joomla. If the folder is missing, the configured value may refer to an old hosting account, migration path, or document root. Do not create a similarly named directory elsewhere and assume Joomla will use it.

Compare it with configuration.php

The temporary directory is stored in Joomla's configuration.php as the tmp_path setting. Reading that file can help when Administrator access is unavailable. Treat configuration.php as sensitive because it also contains database and other site configuration; do not paste the whole file into a public ticket or forum.

Verify that PHP can write there

The folder must be writable by the PHP process running Joomla. A directory can exist and still fail because of ownership, group, ACL, open_basedir, or permission restrictions. Use Joomla's System Information / Folder Permissions diagnostics and hosting-level checks to confirm the actual execution user can use the path.

Distinguish Joomla temp from the system temp directory

Joomla's configured temporary directory is an application setting. It does not have to be the operating system's /tmp directory, and Joomla security guidance recommends avoiding broadly shared system-wide locations for configurable writable paths. Keep the directory within the hosting account's permitted filesystem scope.

Check the path after a migration or restore

Absolute paths commonly change when a site moves between servers or hosting accounts. If extension installation, updates, uploads, or package extraction began failing after a migration, compare the configured temp path with the new account's real filesystem layout and correct only the stale path.

Record the working path

Once verified, document the absolute temp path and the hosting account it belongs to. Recheck it after migrations, account renames, document-root changes, or restores from another server. A known-good path makes future installer and filesystem troubleshooting much faster.
