How to Fix an Incorrect Joomla Temporary Folder Path
Verify the correct server path first
Before changing Joomla, identify a real directory inside the hosting account that PHP can read and write and that is appropriate for Joomla temporary files. Use the hosting control panel or SSH to confirm the absolute filesystem path. Do not copy a path from another server because account roots differ.
Open the Server settings
In Administrator, go to System → Global Configuration → Server and locate Path to Temp Folder. Compare the configured value with the path you verified on the server. A stale path is common after migrations, restores, domain moves, or hosting-account changes.
Correct only the temp path
Replace the incorrect value with the verified absolute path and save Global Configuration. Joomla stores the setting in configuration.php. If the save fails, troubleshoot configuration.php ownership or write access rather than making the entire Joomla tree broadly writable.
Use configuration.php only when Administrator is unavailable
If Joomla cannot load far enough to save Global Configuration, edit the tmp_path value in configuration.php using a secure hosting tool. Make a backup first and preserve the PHP syntax and quoting. Do not alter unrelated database, secret, or session settings while repairing one path.
Check ownership, permissions, and server restrictions
A correct path can still fail when PHP cannot access it. Confirm the directory owner/group, permissions, ACLs, and any open_basedir restriction. Avoid 777 as a shortcut. On managed hosting, ask the provider which ownership and permission model the PHP handler expects.
Retest the operation that exposed the problem
After saving the corrected path, test extension installation or update, package upload/extraction, or the other operation that previously failed. Also check System Information → Folder Permissions and relevant Joomla or server logs. Successful page loading alone does not prove temporary-file operations work.
Clean up stale temporary locations carefully
After the site works with the corrected path, review the old temporary location for leftover installation archives or extracted files. Remove only files confirmed to be obsolete and unrelated to another application. Do not recursively delete a shared system temp directory.
