How to Fix “Folder Is Not Writable” in Joomla

Confirm which folder Joomla reports as not writable

Open the error details or System Information → Folder Permissions and record the exact path. Joomla's Folder Permissions screen lists directories the web server should be able to write and reports their current Writable status. Do not assume the problem is the entire site when only one temporary, log, cache, or media path is affected.

Use Joomla's common baseline carefully

Official Joomla guidance lists 644 for files and 755 for directories as common Unix/Linux defaults and warns against 777. Treat those values as a baseline, not a universal rule. Managed hosting, PHP-FPM pools, CGI/FastCGI, ACLs, containers, and dedicated servers can use different ownership arrangements and tighter permissions safely.

Use Joomla System Information for writable paths

In Administrator, select System → Information Panel → System Information and open Folder Permissions. Joomla reports whether directories it expects the web server to write are Writable. The screen is diagnostic only: it does not change permissions, ownership, ACLs, or server configuration for you.

Change only the affected path

Use the hosting file manager, SFTP/FTP client, or SSH tools supported by the host to change the specific file or directory involved. Record the original owner and mode first. Avoid recursive chmod across the whole hosting account, because unrelated applications, private data, server files, and intentionally restrictive paths may require different settings.

Never use 777 as a permanent workaround

If making a path world-writable appears to fix Joomla, that is evidence that the underlying ownership, group, ACL, or PHP-handler relationship needs attention. Revert the unsafe test and correct the server-side ownership model. Joomla's documentation explicitly discourages 777 permissions because they grant unnecessary access to other users or processes.

Retest the operation that originally failed

After the targeted correction, repeat the exact action: save Global Configuration, upload media, install or update an extension, write cache or logs, or create a temporary file. Check Joomla and server logs if it still fails. A successful page load alone does not prove that Joomla's write-dependent maintenance operations are healthy.

Document the working permission model

Once the site works correctly, record the expected owner, group, file mode, directory mode, PHP handler, and any host-specific ACLs. Recheck them after migrations, restores, account moves, or PHP-handler changes. A known-good baseline is safer than applying generic permission commands whenever a future writable error appears.
