How to Fix “Path to Temp Folder Is Invalid” in Joomla

Confirm the configured value

Open System → Global Configuration → Server and inspect Path to Temp Folder. Joomla expects a writable folder on the server. If Administrator access is unavailable, the same value is stored as tmp_path in configuration.php. Record the current value before changing it.

Verify that the directory actually exists

Use the hosting file manager, SFTP, or SSH to check the exact absolute path. The error often appears after a migration because configuration.php still references the previous server's account path. A URL such as https://example.com/tmp is not a filesystem path and should not be used here.

Check that PHP can traverse and write the path

Every parent directory must allow the PHP execution identity to traverse it, and the temp directory itself must allow the required file operations. Ownership, group membership, ACLs, permissions, or open_basedir can make an existing directory unusable. Diagnose those controls instead of defaulting to 777.

Set a valid application-specific temp directory

Choose a directory within the hosting account that is permitted by the server and writable by Joomla. Joomla security guidance recommends keeping configurable writable paths appropriately protected and avoiding system-wide shared locations such as /tmp when a safer account-specific location is available.

Save the corrected path safely

Update Path to Temp Folder in Global Configuration. If Joomla cannot save configuration.php, fix the ownership or write-access problem affecting that file, or edit only tmp_path through the hosting platform after making a backup. Keep configuration.php protected after the change.

Retest installer and update functions

Run the operation that originally produced the error, such as installing or updating an extension. Check Joomla System Information and logs for remaining filesystem errors. If the path is valid but extraction still fails, investigate disk space, PHP limits, archive support, ownership, and extension-specific errors separately.

Review the change after migrations

Document the new absolute path and include temp/log path verification in migration and restore checklists. Paths that are valid on one host can be invalid on another even when the public domain name stays the same.
