How to Change the Joomla Site Name After Installation
You can change the name of an installed Joomla site from Global Configuration. The change is simple, but it is worth checking the frontend, browser titles, template branding, metadata, and mail identity afterward because not every visible brand name on a Joomla site necessarily comes from the global Site Name value.
You can change an installed Joomla site's global name in seconds, but the old brand may still appear in page titles, template graphics, mail settings, metadata, modules, or extension configuration. Change the global value first, then verify each place that can supply its own text.
Change the global Site Name
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Global Configuration.
- On the Site tab, locate Site Name.
- Enter the new name and save.
- Reload Global Configuration to confirm the value persisted.
Use Global Configuration rather than editing configuration.php by hand when Administrator is working normally.
Check page titles and visible branding
Open the home page and several internal pages and inspect both the visible header and browser-tab title. Joomla can combine menu or content titles with the Site Name depending on SEO and page-title settings.
If the old name remains in the header, inspect the active template style, logo image, custom HTML modules, and template-specific branding. Text embedded in a logo image will not change when the global Site Name changes.
Review mail, metadata, and extension settings
Mail configuration can contain a separate From Name. Newsletter, form, ecommerce, membership, and other extensions may also store their own sender or organization names.
Search for literal uses of the old name in articles, menu metadata, category metadata, structured-data settings, custom modules, template overrides, and extension configuration. Joomla does not perform a global search-and-replace when Site Name changes, so edit only confirmed branding references.
Verify the change and fix save failures
- Confirm Global Configuration retains the new name.
- Test the frontend in a fresh browser session.
- Check browser titles on multiple menu items.
- Check header/logo branding and outbound mail identity.
- Clear relevant caches if old output persists.
If the setting will not save, check configuration.php ownership and permissions and the hosting environment. Do not make the entire Joomla installation world-writable as a workaround.
