How to Choose a Database Table Prefix When Installing Joomla

Joomla adds a table prefix to every core and extension database table. During installation Joomla normally generates a random prefix for you. In most installations, accepting that generated value is the safest and simplest choice.

What the table prefix does

A prefix turns a Joomla table name such as content into a name such as a1b2c_content. Joomla knows the configured prefix and uses it whenever it accesses its tables. The prefix also allows more than one application or Joomla installation to use the same database without giving their tables identical names.

Best choice for a new installation

For a normal new site, leave Joomla's randomly generated prefix in place. The installer generates a value and the prefix should end with an underscore. There is usually no operational benefit to replacing it with a recognizable value such as jos_ or the site name.

If you deliberately choose your own prefix, make it unique within that database and keep the trailing underscore. Do not select a prefix already used by an existing site's tables.

If the database already contains tables

Stop and identify what those tables belong to before installing. Reusing the same prefix can make the installer interact with an existing Joomla table set and can cause data loss or an unusable installation. A unique prefix can technically separate installations in one database, but separate databases are easier to back up, restore, migrate, and troubleshoot when your hosting plan permits them.

Before installing into any non-empty database, make a verified backup.

Prefixes are not a substitute for security

A non-default or random prefix reduces predictable table naming, but it does not replace secure credentials, current Joomla releases, properly maintained extensions, correct file permissions, backups, and server security. Do not treat a custom prefix as protection against SQL injection or a compromised administrator account.

Do not casually change the prefix later

After installation, Joomla stores the active prefix in configuration.php and the physical database tables already use it. Changing only the configured value breaks the mapping between Joomla and its tables. A later prefix change is a migration operation: the tables and configuration must remain synchronized, and extension-specific assumptions should be checked.

If you merely need to find the current prefix, inspect the database settings or the $dbprefix value in configuration.php; do not edit it as a troubleshooting experiment.

Verify your choice

After installation, open the site and Administrator and confirm both work. In a database tool, the Joomla tables should consistently begin with the selected prefix. If multiple applications share the database, confirm that their table namespaces remain distinct.
