How to Configure the Joomla Site Name During Installation

The Joomla Site Name is the human-readable name of the website. It is configured at the beginning of the web installation and can be changed later, so choose a clear production name without treating the decision as irreversible.

What to enter as the Site Name

Enter the name visitors and administrators should recognize, such as Example Community or Example Company Support. The Site Name is not a database hostname, installation folder, or requirement to enter the site's full URL.

Use normal capitalization and branding. Avoid stuffing keywords into the field; page titles and SEO metadata should be managed deliberately rather than turning the site name into a search phrase.

Configure it in the web installer

  1. Open the URL where the Joomla installation files are located.
  2. Select the installation language if necessary.
  3. In the first installation step, enter the Site Name.
  4. Continue to the login-data step and then the database configuration.
  5. Complete installation and verify the frontend and Administrator.

The current Joomla installer separates the site-name step from the Super User login-data and database-connection steps, which makes the Site Name easy to distinguish from account and server credentials.

Can the Site Name be changed later?

Yes. Joomla's installation documentation explicitly treats the Site Name as editable later in Global Configuration. If a temporary staging name was used during setup, change it before launch and review the frontend output afterward.

A template can decide where or whether the configured site name is displayed. If changing the value in Joomla does not alter a visible logo or header, inspect the template's branding settings rather than repeatedly changing Global Configuration.

Site Name versus browser and search titles

The Site Name can participate in page-title presentation depending on Joomla configuration and template behavior, but it does not replace individual article/menu page titles or metadata. After installation, review your global SEO/site-name settings and a few frontend pages to make sure the resulting browser titles read naturally.

Verify the setting

After installation, sign in to Administrator, open Global Configuration, and confirm the site name is correct. Then check the frontend, browser title, and template header. If the old name still appears somewhere, clear relevant Joomla/template/cache layers and determine whether that text is controlled by the template, a module, a menu item, or page metadata instead.
