How to Fix Joomla Installation PHP Requirement Errors

When Joomla installation reports a PHP requirement error, treat the requirement check as a server compatibility test, not something to bypass. For Joomla 6.x, current official requirements list PHP 8.3.0 as the supported minimum and PHP 8.4 as recommended. The website must actually be running a compatible PHP version with the required modules enabled.

1. Identify the requirement Joomla says is failing

Record the exact installer message. Separate a PHP version problem from a missing module, low memory limit, or database-driver problem. Fixing the wrong layer wastes time and can create a second configuration mismatch.

2. Verify the PHP version used by the website

Joomla 6.x currently requires PHP 8.3.0 or later in its supported range; the Joomla project recommends PHP 8.4. Hosting panels often let each domain choose a PHP version. Change the version for the actual Joomla domain or PHP-FPM pool, not merely the command-line php binary.

After changing PHP, reload the installer or check a temporary PHP information page if your host permits one. Remove diagnostic files when finished. A shell command such as php -v proves only the CLI version and may differ from the web server.

3. Verify Joomla's required PHP modules

The current Joomla 6.x technical requirements list json, simplexml, dom, zlib, and gd, plus a database driver option such as mysqlnd, pdo_mysql, or pdo_pgsql. They also recommend mbstring. Enable the module in the PHP configuration used by the site, then restart or reload PHP-FPM/web services when your environment requires it.

4. Make sure the database driver matches your database

A server can satisfy the PHP version requirement but still be unable to install Joomla if PHP cannot talk to the selected database. For MySQL/MariaDB, ensure an appropriate MySQL driver is enabled; for PostgreSQL, ensure the supported PDO PostgreSQL driver is available. Do not install random database extensions just to clear a warning—match the driver to the database service you will use.

5. Check memory separately

The Joomla 6.x requirements recommend a PHP memory limit of at least 256 MB. If the installer specifically reports memory trouble, confirm the effective memory_limit for the website. Changing a different php.ini file will have no effect. On managed hosting, use the PHP selector or ask the host which configuration file controls the domain.

6. Check for multiple PHP configurations

Apache module PHP, PHP-FPM pools, CGI/FastCGI, command-line PHP, and scheduled tasks can each load different configuration files. If the hosting panel says a module is enabled but Joomla still reports it missing, verify the web request's loaded PHP configuration and module list. Restart the relevant PHP service after configuration changes when required.

7. Do not edit Joomla core to bypass requirement checks

Requirement checks protect you from installing onto an unsupported runtime. Editing installer code to suppress them can leave you with fatal errors or an unsupported site immediately after installation. Correct the server, choose a hosting environment that meets the Joomla branch's requirements, or install a Joomla branch appropriate for the supported environment.

Verification checklist

  1. Confirm the exact Joomla branch you are installing.
  2. Confirm the website's effective PHP version.
  3. Confirm required modules are loaded in web PHP.
  4. Confirm the database driver matches the database.
  5. Confirm the effective memory limit and other specifically reported requirements.
  6. Restart/reload the relevant PHP service if needed.
  7. Reload the installer and verify the requirement now passes.

If the same requirement remains red after a hosting-panel change, the strongest clue is that the domain is using a different PHP handler or configuration than the one you edited.
