How to Fix Joomla Installation XML Support Errors
Joomla depends on PHP's XML facilities to read and process XML data, including extension manifests. Joomla 6.x explicitly requires simplexml and dom. If installation reports XML support missing, fix the PHP modules used by the website rather than suppressing the requirement.
1. Identify which XML capability is missing
Record the exact requirement name. “XML support” may refer broadly to the XML/libxml stack, while Joomla's current technical requirements specifically name simplexml and dom. These are related but distinct PHP extensions. Knowing which check fails prevents installing or enabling the wrong package.
2. Verify SimpleXML and DOM in the web PHP runtime
Check the PHP runtime serving the Joomla domain, not just command-line PHP. A temporary diagnostic can test extension_loaded('simplexml'), class_exists('SimpleXMLElement'), extension_loaded('dom'), and class_exists('DOMDocument'). Remove diagnostic files when finished.
PHP's documentation states that SimpleXML and DOM are enabled by default in normal builds but can be disabled at compile time. Linux distributions may package XML-related extensions separately, and hosting panels may expose them as selectable modules.
3. Enable the XML package for the correct PHP branch
Use your host's PHP extension manager or the operating system's package for the exact PHP version serving the site. Package names vary by distribution and hosting stack, so do not copy a package command for a different server. On managed hosting, ask the provider to enable SimpleXML and DOM for the domain's PHP handler.
4. Reload PHP and verify the effective configuration
After changing modules, reload or restart PHP-FPM/web services when required. Then verify from a browser-facing diagnostic that the extensions are loaded. A successful CLI check does not prove the web pool loaded the same modules or php.ini.
5. Check for a damaged or unusually minimal PHP build
If the server claims the XML package is installed but the classes remain unavailable, inspect the loaded configuration files and PHP startup errors. A disabled module, mismatched shared library, wrong extension directory, or minimal custom build can prevent the module from loading. Fix the PHP installation rather than editing Joomla core.
6. Retry the Joomla requirement check
- Confirm the site's PHP version meets the Joomla release requirement.
- Verify SimpleXML and DOM in the browser-facing runtime.
- Enable or repair the correct XML modules for that PHP branch.
- Reload the relevant PHP service if needed.
- Reload the installer and confirm the XML checks pass.
If the installer still reports XML support missing, save the exact requirement message plus PHP startup errors and loaded-module information for the host or administrator. Those details identify whether the remaining fault is PHP packaging, handler selection, or configuration.
