How to Install Joomla Using cPanel
You can install Joomla with cPanel even when your hosting account does not provide a one-click Joomla installer. cPanel supplies the tools needed to place Joomla in the correct document root and create a MySQL or MariaDB database; Joomla's own web installer then performs the CMS installation.
What this method uses
This procedure uses standard cPanel features rather than assuming your provider has installed Softaculous or another third-party application installer. Interface names vary slightly by cPanel version and hosting provider, and providers can disable individual features. The core workflow is:
- identify the domain's document root;
- upload and extract the official Joomla Full Package with File Manager;
- create a database and database user with Database Wizard or the equivalent database interface;
- open the domain in a browser and finish Joomla's web installer.
1. Confirm the domain and its document root
In cPanel, open Domains and locate the domain you want to use. The document root shown for that domain is where its public website files belong. For a primary domain this is commonly public_html; addon domains and subdomains can point to other directories under the account.
If you are creating a subdomain or another domain first, use Domains → Create a New Domain when that feature is enabled by your provider. Do not upload Joomla until you know which directory cPanel is serving for the final hostname.
2. Download Joomla's official Full Package
Download the current stable Joomla Full Package from Joomla Downloads. Save the ZIP locally without extracting it. Uploading the single archive and extracting it inside cPanel is faster and reduces the risk of an incomplete multi-file upload.
3. Upload Joomla with File Manager
- Open Files → File Manager.
- Navigate to the document root for the Joomla domain.
- If the directory contains an existing site, stop and make a verified backup before replacing anything.
- Select Upload and upload the Joomla ZIP package.
- Return to File Manager, select the archive, and choose Extract.
After extraction, verify that Joomla's index.php and folders such as administrator, components, and installation are directly inside the domain's document root. If the archive was extracted into another folder, move the Joomla contents to the correct level.
4. Create the database with cPanel
Use cPanel's Database Wizard when available. cPanel renamed the older MySQL Database Wizard interface in newer versions, so your host may show either label. The wizard creates the database, creates a database user, and lets you assign privileges.
- Create a new database and record the complete database name that cPanel displays. Shared hosts often prepend the cPanel account name.
- Create a dedicated database user with a strong generated password and record the complete username.
- When prompted, choose the privileges for the database user; the current Database Wizard associates the user with the database as part of the wizard.
- For a dedicated new Joomla database, cPanel's ALL PRIVILEGES option is the straightforward setup.
cPanel's current Database Wizard documentation notes that when the wizard creates both the database and user, it automatically grants the user access to the database. If you use Manage My Databases instead, make sure you explicitly add the user to the database and apply the intended privileges.
5. Record the database connection values
Before leaving cPanel, write down:
- Database Host: commonly
localhoston shared hosting, unless your provider specifies another host; - Database Name: including any cPanel account prefix;
- Database Username: including any cPanel account prefix;
- Database Password: the password you created for that database user.
These are not your cPanel login and not your Joomla Super User login.
6. Open the Joomla web installer
Browse to the domain over HTTPS. Joomla should display its installation screen. If you see a cPanel placeholder, an old website, or a directory listing, verify the domain's document root and the extracted file location before continuing.
Complete Joomla's installer using the current sequence:
- choose the language and enter the Site Name;
- select Setup Login Data and create the Super User;
- select Setup Database Connection and enter the database values from cPanel;
- accept Joomla's generated table prefix unless you have a specific reason to choose another unique prefix;
- select Install Joomla and wait for the success screen.
7. Verify the finished Joomla site
Use the success-screen links or browse directly to:
https://example.com/
https://example.com/administrator/Confirm that both load correctly and that HTTPS does not produce a certificate warning. Log in to Administrator, review any recommended PHP-setting notices, and verify Joomla's update status before installing third-party extensions.
8. Clean up in cPanel
- Delete the uploaded Joomla ZIP from the public document root after you have a working installation and backup.
- Do not leave old website files mixed with the Joomla tree unless they are intentionally required.
- Keep the database name, database username, and account access information in a secure password manager or infrastructure record.
- Set up a backup process before making significant changes.
Common cPanel installation problems
- Database Wizard is missing: your hosting provider may have disabled the feature. Look for Manage My Databases or ask the provider to create the database and user.
- Database credentials look correct but Joomla cannot connect: confirm cPanel's complete prefixed names and make sure the user is attached to the database with privileges.
- Joomla installer does not open: check the domain document root and whether the Joomla files are one directory too deep.
- ZIP cannot be extracted: the server may lack the archive support cPanel uses for ZIP extraction; use SFTP/SSH or ask the host for assistance.
- Domain is not reachable over HTTPS: verify DNS and certificate/AutoSSL status before launch.
- PHP requirement errors: cPanel access alone does not guarantee that the hosting plan's PHP environment meets the Joomla version's requirements.
What about Softaculous or another cPanel auto-installer?
Some hosting companies add third-party application installers to cPanel, but those are not guaranteed cPanel features and their screens differ by provider. If you intentionally use one, verify that it offers a current Joomla release and understand what database, directory, and administrator settings it creates. The standard File Manager + Database Wizard + Joomla web-installer method remains usable without that extra software.
