How to Remove the Joomla Installation Folder After Setup
On current Joomla releases, a normal completed installation removes the /installation directory automatically. Joomla's current path documentation explicitly describes JPATH_INSTALLATION as the installation folder and notes that Joomla deletes this folder after installation. If an installation directory remains after setup, first determine whether installation actually completed before deleting anything.
1. Confirm Joomla setup completed successfully
Open the site's Administrator login and the frontend. If you can sign in with the administrator account created during setup and the site loads normally, the installed site is the system you intend to keep. If setup failed midway and there is no valid installed site yet, do not treat folder removal as the repair; resolve or restart the failed installation instead.
2. Check the Joomla root for installation
Using the hosting file manager, SFTP, or shell access, locate the Joomla root—the directory containing the site's main index.php and configuration.php. Look for a directory named exactly installation. Do not delete similarly named directories belonging to extensions, backups, staging copies, or another Joomla instance.
3. If it remains after a successful install, remove only that directory
Make or confirm a current backup, then delete the root-level installation directory and its contents using your normal hosting account. You do not need to delete administrator, libraries, plugins, templates, or other Joomla directories. If deletion is denied, correct the ownership/permissions of that directory or ask the host to remove it; do not recursively loosen the whole site.
4. Do not recreate the folder after Joomla has removed it
Some older Joomla guidance emphasized a manual “Remove installation folder” step. Current Joomla behavior removes it as part of installation. If the directory is already absent, there is nothing to do. Recreating an empty installation directory provides no benefit.
5. Be careful with development and manual-testing workflows
Joomla's programmer documentation includes a manual-testing workflow that deliberately says not to remove the installation folder at the final installation stage because the test process may need it. That is a development/testing exception, not normal production-site guidance. If you intentionally maintain a Joomla source/test clone, follow that workflow instead of applying production cleanup blindly.
6. Verify the site after cleanup
- Reload the frontend.
- Sign in to Administrator.
- Confirm
configuration.phpremains present and the site uses the expected database. - Confirm the root-level
installationdirectory is gone. - Keep your backup until you have verified normal operation.
If the folder repeatedly reappears, investigate the deployment, restore, or synchronization process that is copying it back rather than repeatedly deleting it by hand.
