How a CDN Can Affect Joomla Caching
A CDN adds another cache outside Joomla
Joomla can cache component, module, or full-page output on the origin server, while a content delivery network can cache responses at edge locations closer to visitors. These layers operate independently unless you deliberately coordinate their cache rules and invalidation behavior.
Static files and HTML can follow different rules
CDNs commonly cache static resources such as images, CSS, and JavaScript, while HTML may be bypassed or cached only by explicit rules. Review the CDN's actual cache policy rather than assuming every Joomla response is cached. The response headers and CDN cache-status indicators are more reliable than the product name.
Origin headers influence many CDN decisions
Cache-Control and related headers can tell a CDN whether a response is public, private, fresh, or should not be stored. CDN-specific rules can override origin behavior. When Joomla or an extension sets cookies or private-cache directives, the edge may bypass caching to protect personalized content.
Edge caching can outlive Joomla's own cache
Clearing System → Maintenance → Clear Cache removes Joomla-managed cache entries but does not automatically purge an independent CDN. If an old page remains after Joomla cache is cleared, purge the relevant CDN object or cache according to the provider's supported controls and retest.
Caching HTML requires special care with user state
Login, account, cart, membership, checkout, form, and other session-dependent pages must not be shared between visitors. Configure edge rules to bypass personalized routes and responses. A CDN rule that forces cacheability can override protections the origin intended, so test authenticated and guest workflows separately.
Use cache-status headers to identify the serving layer
Many CDNs expose a response header that indicates a hit, miss, bypass, revalidation, or similar state. Compare the public response with the origin when your provider offers a supported origin-bypass method. This helps determine whether stale content came from Joomla, the web server, or the edge.
Coordinate expiration and purge behavior
Document Joomla cache lifetimes, CDN edge TTLs, browser-cache directives, and how deployments or content changes purge each layer. A predictable cache stack is easier to troubleshoot than several independently configured caches with unrelated expiration times.
