How to Check Whether PHP OPcache Is Enabled for Joomla

Check the PHP environment used by the website

The web server's PHP configuration is what matters for normal Joomla page requests. A command-line PHP binary can use a different php.ini and OPcache configuration, so a CLI check alone may not represent the PHP SAPI serving Joomla through the browser.

Use Joomla System Information as a starting point

In Administrator, open System → System Information and review the PHP version and PHP Information view when your hosting environment exposes it. Search the PHP information for an OPcache or Zend OPcache section. An active section can show whether the extension is loaded and the values applied to the web request.

Look specifically at opcache.enable

PHP documents opcache.enable as the directive that enables the opcode cache. If the OPcache extension is loaded but opcache.enable is Off for the web SAPI, PHP is not using the opcode cache for ordinary Joomla web requests.

Do not confuse opcache.enable_cli with the website setting

PHP has a separate opcache.enable_cli directive for command-line PHP. It can be Off while OPcache is enabled for web requests, or vice versa. Check the environment that actually serves Joomla before concluding that the site's OPcache is disabled.

Use hosting controls when PHP Information is restricted

Managed hosts may hide detailed PHP information or control OPcache globally. Check the host's PHP selector, control panel, or documentation, or ask support to confirm whether Zend OPcache is loaded and enabled for the site's PHP handler. Avoid uploading a permanent public phpinfo page because it exposes sensitive environment details.

Check status carefully if you have server access

Authorized administrators can use PHP's OPcache status functions or trusted server monitoring to inspect cache memory, cached scripts, hits, misses, and restart state. Restrict diagnostic scripts from public access and remove them after testing. A loaded extension and an actively populated cache provide stronger evidence than a configuration label alone.

Record the result with the PHP version

Document the PHP version, SAPI or hosting handler, opcache.enable state, and any important memory or validation settings. This makes later Joomla performance comparisons meaningful and prevents a CLI result from being mistaken for the web server configuration.
