How to Clear Expired Joomla Cache Files
Open Joomla's cache maintenance screen
In Joomla Administrator, go to System → Maintenance → Clear Cache. Current Joomla help exposes a Clear Expired Cache toolbar action from the cache-maintenance screen. This operation is designed to remove expired cache files while leaving cache entries that Joomla still considers current.
Choose Clear Expired Cache
Use the Clear Expired Cache action and allow Joomla to inspect its cache data. Unlike a full cache clear, this maintenance operation does not intentionally discard every current cached item, so visitors can retain the performance benefit of cache entries that have not expired.
Understand why the operation can take longer
Joomla documentation warns that expired-cache cleanup can be resource intensive on sites with many cache items because Joomla has to determine which entries are expired. A full Clear Cache operation can be quicker because it does not need to preserve current entries.
Do not confuse expiration cleanup with a forced refresh
If you changed a template, article, language, or configuration and need visitors to receive newly generated output immediately, clearing only expired entries may not be enough. Current cache entries can remain valid until their lifetime ends. Use the appropriate Clear Cache groups when you intentionally need a fresh cache.
Watch for timeout or resource errors
On a site with a very large cache, inspect PHP and server logs if the cleanup does not finish. Older Joomla documentation notes that the operation can exceed execution limits because each cache item is checked. Correct the resource problem or rerun the supported operation rather than deleting arbitrary directories.
Use routine cleanup appropriately
Expired-cache cleanup is useful maintenance because obsolete cache files no longer provide a performance benefit. The appropriate frequency depends on cache volume, disk space, site traffic, and the site's caching configuration. Avoid scheduling aggressive cleanup simply because the option exists.
Verify disk and site behavior afterward
After cleanup, confirm the site continues to render correctly and, when disk usage was the concern, check whether cache storage decreased. If expired data immediately accumulates unusually fast, investigate the extension or caching layer generating it rather than treating repeated manual purges as the permanent fix.
