How to Disable Joomla Caching

Identify which caching mechanism is enabled

Joomla can use System Cache in Conservative or Progressive mode and can separately use the System - Page Cache plugin. Disabling only one mechanism may leave another active, so first determine which caching layers the site actually uses.

Disable System Cache in Global Configuration

Go to System → Global Configuration → System and locate the Cache section. Set System Cache to OFF - Caching disabled and save. This disables the global Conservative or Progressive caching mode used by Joomla's component and module caching mechanisms.

Check the System - Page Cache plugin separately

Go to System → Manage → Plugins and locate System - Page Cache. If whole-page caching also needs to be disabled, disable that plugin. Page Cache is a separate mechanism from the System Cache setting, so changing Global Configuration alone does not necessarily disable it.

Clear existing Joomla cache entries

After disabling caching, go to System → Clear Cache and remove the relevant cached entries so visitors are not testing against stale files left from the previous configuration. Joomla's cache management tools are safer than deleting arbitrary files from the filesystem.

Test while logged out

Verify representative frontend pages as a guest. Current Joomla Programmer Documentation notes that the main administrator-controlled caching mechanisms do not cache logged-on users, so an authenticated Administrator session is not the best test of whether guest caching has been removed.

Check external caching too

If pages still appear cached, Joomla may not be the only caching layer. Review the hosting platform, reverse proxy, CDN, browser cache, and third-party performance extensions. Disabling Joomla's cache cannot purge or disable an independent cache operated outside Joomla.

Document why caching was disabled

If caching was turned off to troubleshoot stale content or an extension conflict, record the affected pages and symptoms. Once the underlying issue is understood, you can decide whether to restore a narrower Conservative configuration or keep caching disabled rather than repeatedly toggling settings without a baseline.
