How to Enable Joomla Caching

Choose the caching mode before enabling it

Joomla offers Conservative and Progressive System Cache modes in Global Configuration, plus the separate System - Page Cache plugin. Start with the least aggressive mechanism that meets the site's needs. Conservative caching is generally easier to control module by module.

Open Global Configuration

Sign in to Joomla Administrator and go to System → Global Configuration. Open the System tab and find the Cache section. Joomla's current help identifies System Cache, Cache Handler, Platform Specific Caching, Cache Time, and Path to Cache Folder among the available settings.

Select Conservative or Progressive caching

Change System Cache from OFF - Caching disabled to the desired enabled mode. Conservative caching allows supported modules to use their individual caching setting. Progressive caching is more aggressive with module rendering. Do not enable Progressive caching simply because it sounds faster; test the site's behavior.

Review the cache handler and lifetime

The native File cache handler requires writable cache storage. Review Cache Time, which Joomla defines in minutes as the maximum time a cache file is stored before refresh. Leave the custom cache-folder path blank unless the hosting environment has a specific reason to use another writable location.

Configure module caching when using Conservative mode

Open important site modules and review Advanced → Caching where the module exposes it. Use Global allows the module to participate in Conservative caching; No caching excludes it. Dynamic modules such as session-sensitive or frequently changing output may need to remain uncached.

Save and test as a guest

Save Global Configuration, then test representative frontend pages while logged out. Current Joomla Programmer Documentation states these administrator-facing cache mechanisms do not cache for logged-on users, so testing only while authenticated can make a working cache appear inactive.

Measure correctness before speed

Verify menus, modules, forms, access-dependent content, integrations, and frequently updated pages before considering the change complete. If stale or incorrect output appears, disable or narrow the relevant caching mechanism and clear Joomla's cache rather than leaving a faster but incorrect configuration in production.
