How to Enable the Joomla Page Cache Plugin

Understand what Page Cache does

Joomla's System - Page Cache plugin stores the full HTML of an eligible page and can return that stored HTML for a later request to the same URL. It is more aggressive than Conservative or Progressive System Cache because Joomla can serve the cached page instead of regenerating its component and module output.

Open the Plugins manager

In Joomla Administrator, go to System → Manage → Plugins and find System - Page Cache. Open the plugin before enabling it so you can review its available options, including exclusions. Page Cache is controlled by this plugin rather than by selecting Conservative or Progressive caching in Global Configuration.

Review exclusions before enabling

Current Joomla Programmer Documentation states that the Page Cache plugin can exclude specified menu items and URLs. Use exclusions for pages whose output must remain dynamic or depends on session, cookie, request, or transaction state. Shopping carts and similar interactive workflows are poor candidates for shared full-page caching.

Enable and save the plugin

Set System - Page Cache to Enabled and save. Joomla then becomes able to cache eligible guest page HTML by URL. The cached HTML remains reusable until its cache lifetime expires or the relevant cache is cleared.

Review the global Cache Time

Page Cache uses the Cache Time configured in Global Configuration → System. Joomla documentation describes this value in minutes. Choose a lifetime that balances performance with how quickly changed public content needs to appear.

Test as a logged-out visitor

Current Joomla Programmer Documentation states that Joomla does not use this Page Cache mechanism for logged-on users. Test representative pages in a guest session. Verify static pages, navigation, forms, login flows, shopping or membership functions, and any output that varies according to cookies or request state.

Remember that content edits do not automatically clear every cached page

Joomla's documentation specifically notes that editing an article does not automatically clear the Page Cache for pages where that article appears. When an immediate refresh is required, use System → Clear Cache and remove the page cache group, or wait for the configured cache lifetime to expire.
