How to Exclude Pages from Joomla Page Caching
Exclude a page from Joomla Page Cache when its output must be generated fresh for each request or can vary according to session, cookies, submitted data, account state, or a transaction. Joomla's System - Page Cache plugin provides exclusion controls so you can keep full-page caching enabled without caching unsuitable workflows.
Identify pages that should not use full-page cache
Do not start by excluding random URLs. List the workflows whose output is dynamic or visitor-specific. Common candidates include carts, checkout, account pages, membership actions, forms, search or filtered results, and extension pages that depend on session state.
Also review extension documentation. Some extensions manage caching themselves or document specific routes that should remain uncached.
Open the System - Page Cache plugin
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Go to System → Manage → Plugins.
- Search for System - Page Cache.
- Open the plugin and locate its page-exclusion settings.
Page Cache is controlled here, not by the Conservative or Progressive System Cache selection in Global Configuration.
Use menu-item exclusions when the page has a stable menu item
If the dynamic page is represented by a Joomla menu item, use the plugin's menu-item exclusion control when available. A menu-item exclusion is usually easier to understand and maintain than a broad URL pattern because it follows Joomla's menu routing directly.
After saving, document why the menu item is excluded so a future administrator does not remove the exception without understanding its purpose.
Use URL exclusions narrowly
Use URL-based exclusions for requests that are not represented cleanly by one menu item or when a specific URL range must remain dynamic. Match only the paths required by the workflow. An overly broad rule can disable Page Cache across a large part of the site and hide the performance benefit you intended to keep.
Test several URLs that should match the rule and several that should not. Pay attention to language prefixes, aliases, subdirectory installations, and query-string behavior where relevant.
Clear existing page cache after changing exclusions
Changing an exclusion controls future cache use, but an older cached response may still exist. Go to System → Maintenance → Clear Cache and remove the relevant page-cache data when you need the new exclusion behavior to take effect immediately.
Verify excluded and cached pages as a guest
- Open a private or logged-out browser session.
- Visit an excluded page and exercise its dynamic behavior.
- Change state where appropriate, such as adding an item to a cart or submitting a test form.
- Confirm the next request reflects the changed state.
- Visit a normal cacheable page and verify it still behaves correctly.
- Repeat after clearing browser or external cache if those layers could affect the result.
If the excluded page still appears cached, confirm the response is not coming from a CDN, hosting cache, reverse proxy, or third-party performance extension outside Joomla Page Cache.
