How to Fix Joomla Showing Stale Content

Confirm the saved content is actually current

Open the affected article, module, menu item, or extension record in Administrator and confirm the expected change was saved. Check publication state, access, language, category, and scheduling when relevant. A correct cache cannot display a change that never reached the record used by the frontend.

Clear Joomla's relevant cache groups

Go to System → Maintenance → Clear Cache. Select the cache groups related to the affected output, or use Delete All when a complete Joomla cache reset is justified. Joomla notes that cached files are temporary and may make the site briefly slower while they are rebuilt.

Pay special attention to Page Cache

If System - Page Cache is enabled, a full HTML page can remain cached by URL until expiry. Joomla documentation specifically notes that editing an article does not automatically clear every Page Cache entry containing that article. Clear the page cache group when an immediate refresh is required.

Test as a guest and with a clean browser request

Joomla's Page, Progressive, and Conservative administrator-controlled caches are not used for logged-on users according to current Joomla Programmer Documentation. Compare a logged-out request with your authenticated view. Also use a private window or a forced browser refresh when browser caching could be involved.

Check external caching layers

A CDN, reverse proxy, hosting accelerator, browser cache, or third-party performance extension can continue serving stale output after Joomla's own cache is cleared. Purge only the relevant external layer and verify its cache rules rather than repeatedly clearing Joomla.

Check whether you are viewing the expected page variant

Menu Item ID, language, URL parameters, aliases, redirects, domain variants, and template assignments can lead to a different frontend route than the one you edited. Compare the actual URL and menu context before assuming the database or cache is wrong.

Isolate the layer causing the stale response

Temporarily disable or bypass one caching layer at a time when safe, clear that layer, and retest. Once the content updates, re-enable the required caching with corrected exclusions or lifetimes. This produces a diagnosis instead of leaving performance features disabled indefinitely.
