How to Safely Delete Joomla Cache Files Manually
Prefer Joomla's supported clearing tools first
Manual deletion should be a fallback, not the normal cache-maintenance method. When possible, use System → Maintenance → Clear Cache or Joomla's cache:clean CLI command. Those methods operate through Joomla and reduce the chance of deleting unrelated files.
Identify the configured cache location
Before removing anything, check the site's configuration and cache handler. Joomla can use a configured Path to Cache Folder, and extensions may maintain separate caches. Do not assume a directory named cache is automatically the correct target, especially on sites with multiple Joomla installations.
Take a backup or snapshot before filesystem changes
A cache should be disposable, but a mistaken path is not. Confirm the Joomla root, create a current backup or hosting snapshot, and verify the directory contents before deletion. Never use a broad recursive command until the target path has been checked explicitly.
Delete generated cache contents, not application code
Remove only files and cache-group directories that are clearly generated cache data for the confirmed Joomla cache location. Do not delete Joomla core directories, configuration.php, extension files, media, templates, or arbitrary temporary directories. If you are uncertain about an item, leave it in place and use a supported clearing method instead.
Preserve required directory structure and access controls
Hosting environments may rely on placeholder files, access-control files, or directory permissions. Avoid replacing the cache directory with a new one unless you know the required owner, permissions, and protective files. Deleting generated entries inside the confirmed cache location is safer than rebuilding the entire directory.
Check ownership and permissions after cleanup
If Joomla cannot recreate cache files, inspect filesystem ownership and permissions rather than repeatedly deleting the directory. The PHP process needs the access required by the site's cache configuration, but granting unnecessary write access creates avoidable security risk.
Reload and verify the site
Request several frontend and Administrator pages after the cleanup and watch for errors. The first requests may be slower while cache data is regenerated. If stale content persists, check Joomla Page Cache, browser caching, a CDN, reverse proxy, or extension-specific cache before performing more filesystem deletion.
