How to Troubleshoot Joomla After Enabling Page Cache
If a Joomla site starts showing stale content or broken dynamic behavior after enabling System - Page Cache, reproduce the problem as a guest, clear existing page-cache entries, and then add only the exclusions required by dynamic workflows.
Prove Page Cache is related
Record the exact affected URL and symptom with Page Cache enabled. Test in a private logged-out browser session because full-page caching is primarily relevant to guest requests. If safe, temporarily disable System - Page Cache, clear its entries, and repeat the same request. If the problem disappears, the plugin or its exclusions are a strong suspect.
Clear entries created under the old rules
Go to System → Maintenance → Clear Cache and remove the relevant page-cache data. Changing a plugin setting does not make an already stored bad response useful. Retest immediately before changing several other settings.
Identify pages that must remain dynamic
Review carts, checkout, account pages, membership actions, forms, search/filter results, and extension routes that depend on session, cookies, submitted data, or visitor state. A shared cached page is inappropriate when the same URL must legitimately produce different output for different requests.
Configure narrow exclusions
- Open System → Manage → Plugins → System - Page Cache.
- Use menu-item exclusions for dynamic pages represented by stable menu items.
- Use URL exclusions only where needed for routes not covered cleanly by menu items.
- Save the plugin and clear old page-cache entries again.
Keep exclusions narrow so normal public content can still benefit from caching.
Separate Page Cache from other caches
Joomla System Cache, module caching, third-party extensions, hosting caches, reverse proxies, and CDNs can all affect the same request. If the problem remains after Page Cache is bypassed, isolate those layers one at a time instead of assuming the plugin is still responsible.
Retest complete visitor workflows
Do more than reload one page. Test form validation and submission, redirects, login and logout, cart or member state, language changes, and any extension-specific dynamic workflow. Keep Page Cache enabled only where the resulting HTML is safe to reuse for guest requests.
