How to Enable Joomla Web Cron

Decide whether Web Cron fits the site

Use Web Cron when an external HTTP scheduler is a practical way to trigger Joomla Scheduled Tasks, especially when server-side cron or shell access is unavailable. If reliable server cron already invokes Joomla's CLI scheduler, adding another trigger can make operations harder to diagnose without providing a useful benefit.

Open Scheduled Tasks options

Sign in to Joomla Administrator and go to System → Manage → Scheduled Tasks. Select Options from the toolbar. Joomla keeps Web Cron as a global scheduler option rather than a setting inside each individual scheduled task.

Enable Web Cron

Locate the Web Cron section and change Web Cron from Disabled to Enabled. Joomla's help documentation states that Web Cron is disabled by default and that the enabled mode requires a hash to trigger the scheduler.

Set the required key or hash and save

Provide the required Web Cron key or hash as the interface directs and save the options. Before the first save Joomla reports that a key is required. After saving, the options screen provides a Webcron link URL that you can copy.

Configure the external requester

Copy the generated Web Cron URL into the trusted web-cron service or HTTP scheduler that will call it. Set a frequency appropriate for the Joomla tasks that need opportunities to run. The external request frequency and each task's own execution rule are separate settings.

Protect the generated URL

Handle the Web Cron link as sensitive configuration. Do not put it in public tickets, screenshots, source repositories, analytics notes, or documentation available to ordinary visitors. Anyone who obtains the working trigger URL may be able to invoke the scheduler endpoint.

Test automatic execution

Manually test a safe task first, then allow the external service to request the Web Cron URL. Check the task's Last Run value and, on Joomla versions that provide it, Scheduled Tasks Execution History. Confirm the task's intended real-world result as well as the scheduler record.
