How to Enable the Joomla Lazy Scheduler

Confirm that visitor-triggered scheduling is appropriate

Use Lazy Scheduler when the site receives enough frontend traffic and the scheduled work can tolerate opportunistic rather than exact triggering. For critical jobs or low-traffic sites, a server cron invoking Joomla's CLI can provide a more predictable trigger.

Open Scheduled Tasks options

Sign in to Joomla Administrator and go to System → Manage → Scheduled Tasks. Select Options from the toolbar. Joomla's Scheduled Tasks options contain global scheduler settings in addition to the individual task records.

Enable Lazy Scheduler

Find the Lazy Scheduler section and set it to Enabled. Joomla's help documentation describes the enabled state as allowing tasks to be triggered by site visitors. This setting controls the trigger mechanism; it does not automatically enable individual scheduled task records.

Review the Request Interval

Set or review the Request Interval. Joomla documentation lists 300 seconds as the default. Choose an interval that is reasonable for the site and workload. A shorter interval creates more frequent opportunities to check scheduled work but does not turn Lazy Scheduler into an exact-time cron service.

Save the options

Save the Scheduled Tasks options and return to the task list. Confirm that the tasks you expect to run are themselves enabled and have appropriate execution rules. A correctly enabled Lazy Scheduler cannot execute a task that is disabled or not due.

Test the task before testing the trigger

Use the task's manual Test Task control when it is safe to do so. This isolates the task logic from the scheduler trigger. If manual execution fails, fix that problem first rather than changing Lazy Scheduler settings repeatedly.

Verify an automatic visitor-triggered run

After the request interval has elapsed and the task becomes due, generate normal frontend traffic and then check the task's Last Run information or Execution History where available. Confirm the intended real-world effect as well. Document that Lazy Scheduler is the site's chosen trigger so another administrator does not add competing automation unnecessarily.
