How to Fix Joomla Scheduled Task Memory Limit Errors
Verify that memory exhaustion is the failure
Capture the exact PHP or task error and the time it occurred. A PHP memory exhaustion message normally identifies an allowed memory size and an attempted allocation. Correlate it with Joomla's Execution History and server logs so you do not confuse memory exhaustion with a timeout, database error, or external API failure.
Identify which execution environment is failing
A task tested from Administrator can run under a different PHP configuration from the same task launched by server cron. Joomla's CLI documentation notes that command-line execution can differ from the web-server environment. Check the effective memory limit for the environment that actually fails.
Look for abnormal memory use first
Review what the task processes: very large result sets, unbounded file lists, image processing, imports, exports, or extension code that accumulates objects can consume excessive memory. If memory usage suddenly increased after an update or data change, investigate that change before simply raising the limit.
Reduce the workload when the task supports it
Use task-specific batch-size, limit, pagination, or scope settings when available. Breaking a large operation into smaller supported units is often safer than giving one process an ever-larger memory allowance. Follow the extension developer's documentation for resumable or batched task behavior.
Change PHP memory limits through the supported host method
If the workload is legitimate and the server has adequate resources, adjust the PHP memory limit using the hosting provider's supported configuration method. Do not assume that editing one php.ini affects both web and CLI PHP. Confirm the effective value in the same runtime that executes the task.
Do not confuse Joomla Task Timeout with PHP memory
Scheduled Tasks Options includes a Task Timeout, documented with a 300-second default, but that setting controls execution time rather than PHP's memory ceiling. Raising Task Timeout will not fix a process that exhausts memory, and raising memory will not fix a task that is being terminated for running too long.
Retest and watch resource use
Run the task again after one targeted correction, verify its real-world outcome, and review Execution History and logs. If memory consumption continues growing across equivalent runs, treat that as a sign of an inefficient workload or extension defect rather than repeatedly increasing the limit.
